A Midsummer Night’s Dream (abridged like mad)

“What fools these mortals be! They seek their hate with their love to mix, Not knowing each affection’s office, Nor whence it came, nor whither it will go; But by their own confusions lead awry, The very errors of the mind they do confess, By giving their affections to the wind, That hourly change their minds, like weather-vanes, Or like the fleeting air, which here and there Doth change his nature with each change of place.”
-William Shakespeare

A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Wyndonshire Renaissance Faire

Step into a realm where the line between reality and enchantment blurs, as the Wynonshire Renaissance Faire brings to life an excerpt from Shakespeare’s beloved comedy, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Under the canopy of ancient oaks, our stage is set in a woodland glade, where the magic of the forest intertwines with the magic of the bard’s words.

In this rendition, we focus on the bewitched forest scene, where lovers, fairies, and mechanicals converge in a whirl of confusion and love. The air is thick with mischief, as Puck, the playful sprite, enacts Oberon’s plan with the love potion. Watch as the characters navigate through this enchanted night, their identities and affections amusingly mixed up under the influence of fairy magic.

Our actors, dressed in somple period costumes, bring to life the characters with an authenticity that transports you back to Shakespeare’s time. Helena’s lament, Lysander’s bewildered pursuit, and Hermia’s fiery spirit are portrayed with passion and humor. The mechanicals, led by Bottom, offer comic relief with their earnest yet bungled performance of “Pyramus and Thisbe,” adding layers of laughter to the night’s festivities.

The setting itself is part of the show, with the natural beauty of the faire’s landscape enhancing the ethereal quality of the play. Fireflies add to the magical ambiance, and the sounds of the forest complement the dialogue, making you feel as if you’ve truly stepped into Shakespeare’s enchanted woods.

This performance not only entertains but educates, providing insights into Elizabethan language, humor, and the cultural significance of theatre in Renaissance society. It’s an invitation to laugh, to ponder, and to revel in the timeless beauty of Shakespeare’s work amidst the festivities of our faire.

Join us for this magical interlude where love, laughter, and the folly of humans under the moonlit sky create an unforgettable experience at the Wyndershire Renaissance Faire.

Goblin, goblin, burning bright...

Goblin Trainin’

Welcome to Goblin School at our Renaissance Faire, where mischief and magic meet education in the most unusual way. Here, young scoundrels can embrace their inner goblin for a day of fun, learning, and perhaps a bit of mayhem.

The Setting: Goblin School is set in a rustic, overgrown part of the faire, where makeshift huts and a tangle of vines create the perfect goblin lair. The atmosphere is filled with the sounds of cackles, the rustle of leaves, and the occasional clatter of mismatched cookware.

The Curriculum:

  • Goblin Speak: Learn the rough, guttural language of goblins, including how to sound convincingly mischievous or scheming.
  • Sneaky Skills: Master the art of sneaking, hiding, and ambushing. We’ll teach you how to move silently through the underbrush or how to blend into the shadows.
  • Practical Pranking: From harmless tricks to elaborate schemes, we’ll explore the fine art of pranking. There will be workshops on making simple traps, disguises, and understanding the psychology behind a good prank.
  • Goblin Crafts: Turn trash into treasure with lessons on creating goblin gear from found objects. Think of it as alchemy but with less gold and more… creativity.
  • Mischief Making: Classes on how to sow just the right amount of chaos, teaching the balance between fun and folly.

The Experience: Participants will dress up in goblin attire, complete with pointy ears and ragged clothing, fully immersing themselves in goblin culture. The day ends with a ‘Goblin Graduation’ where each student receives a badge of mischief, marking their new status as an honorary member of the goblin tribe.

Come to Goblin School, where learning is as wild and unpredictable as the creatures themselves.

Quoits

Gather ’round, ye merry folk, for at our Renaissance Faire, we’ve brought back the ancient game of Quoits, a pastime that would have been familiar to knights, peasants, and nobles alike in days of yore. Quoits, or as some might call it, the game of iron rings, harkens back to a time when skill and a steady hand were valued in the village square or castle courtyard.

Our Quoits pits are set within the verdant fields, surrounded by the hustle and bustle of faire life, where the clank of metal rings hitting the target echoes the sounds of medieval merriment. Here, the rules are simple yet challenging: cast your quoit, a hoop of metal or rope, towards the peg or stake planted firmly in the ground. The aim is to encircle the peg or come as close as possible, much like the strategic games of old where precision was key to victory.

Participants, whether they be squires or ladies, take turns, each throw measured by the crowd’s cheers or the occasional jest. The game fosters a spirit of competition wrapped in camaraderie, as players from all walks of life, dressed in their finest medieval garb, step up to challenge each other. There’s an art to the toss; some throw with a gentle underhand, whispering a prayer to the winds, while others might opt for a more forceful overhand, hoping to claim the peg with might and main.

Victory in Quoits isn’t just about the score but about the tales spun around the game. Who will be this day’s champion? Will it be the blacksmith with his iron-forged aim or the nimble-fingered bard with a song for every throw? Come, test your mettle at Quoits, where every toss is a dance between skill and fortune, in true Renaissance spirit.

Witchery.

The Dancing Witches

“The witches’ dance was a spectacle of shadows and light, a celebration of the night where each step was a spell, each turn a connection to the ancient powers of the earth. They danced not just with their feet but with their souls, weaving magic into the very air, turning the dark into something sacred, something alive.”
-Charles DeLint

Fairy Festival Evening

Friday night is “Fairy Night,” transforming the event into a magical realm where the lines between myth and reality blur. As twilight descends, the faire grounds will be bathed in a soft glow from lanterns and fireflies, casting an ethereal light that beckons all to a night of enchantment. The air will be thick with the scent of wildflowers and the distant sound of whimsical melodies played on lutes and flutes, creating an ambiance where fairies are not just guests but the very essence of the night.

Imagine the scene: the market stalls, usually bustling with daytime trade, now decked with gossamer wings, shimmering dust, and fairy lights. Performers, adorned in delicate costumes with wings that flutter in the breeze, will weave through the crowd, engaging in playful mischief or sharing ancient tales of the fae. The main stage will host a grand ball, where the music invites everyone to dance under the stars, perhaps even catching a glimpse of a real fairy or two among the revelers.

Children (and the young at heart) can participate in a scavenger hunt for fairy treasures hidden around the faire, with clues leading them to learn about different fairy folk from various cultures. Workshops will teach the art of making fairy wands, crafting your own wings, or learning the secret language of flowers said to be beloved by fairies.

As the night deepens, a grand parade will commence, led by the Fairy Queen, with performers, musicians, and visitors alike joining in a procession that celebrates the magic of the night. This Fairy Night at your Renaissance Faire promises not just entertainment but an immersive experience into a world where magic is palpable, and everyone can be part of the fairy tale.

Living chess.

Living Chess

At the Wyndonshire Renaissance Faire, the living chess match transforms the ancient game into a vibrant, theatrical performance that captivates audiences with its blend of strategy, drama, and historical immersion. Unlike the quiet concentration of a traditional chess game, this version bursts to life with costumed participants embodying the roles of kings, queens, knights, and pawns on a grand, open-air board set in the heart of the faire’s grounds.

The Setting:

The chessboard itself is an impressive sight, laid out in a grassy field or a cleared area within the faire, each square marked by the distinctive lines of a chess set. Each square is large enough to accommodate the human chess pieces, with the board’s design often enhancing the medieval ambiance, sometimes with flagstones or painted wood, sometimes with natural elements like flowers or herbs marking the boundaries. Around the board, spectators gather, their excitement palpable as they await the unfolding drama.

The Pieces Come to Life:

The participants, dressed in elaborate period costumes, bring the chess pieces to life. Knights wear armor or chainmail, their helmets gleaming under the sun, while pawns might be in simpler, yet still authentic, attire representing the common folk. The queen, often in a flowing gown with a crown or tiara, and the king, in regal robes, stand majestically, commanding the board. Each piece moves with a certain grace or authority, guided by the game’s rules but also by the character they portray.

The Game Unfolds:

As the game progresses, the players, who might be positioned off the board or within a designated area, communicate their moves through gestures, commands, or through a designated ‘herald’ who announces each move with flair, enhancing the theatricality. “The white knight to D4!” might be bellowed, and the knight, with a flourish, strides to the new position, perhaps accompanied by the sound of a lute or drum to mark the move.

Educational and Entertainment Value:

The living chess match at Wyndonshire serves not only as entertainment but also as an educational tool, immersing the audience in medieval history and culture. Spectators, especially younger ones, get a tactile understanding of chess strategy and medieval warfare tactics. The game becomes a centerpiece of the Renaissance Faire. This event is not merely a game; it’s a living, breathing spectacle that combines strategy, history, drama, and community in a way that captivates both players and spectators alike.

Tea Dueling

Tea Dueling

In the heart of the Wyndonshire Renaissance Faire, amidst the bustling market stalls and the echoes of medieval merriment, lies a curious and delightful spectacle known as tea dueling. This unique event combines the elegance of tea with the competitive spirit of a duel, offering participants and spectators alike a blend of amusement, strategy, and a touch of historical whimsy.

The Basics of Tea Dueling:

Tea dueling is not your typical affair. Instead of swords or pistols, the weapons are delicate porcelain cups, and the battlefield is a table adorned with the finest teapots and saucers. Participants engage in a contest where the objective is to be the first to consume a set amount of tea, but with a twist – the tea must be drunk in such a way that upon finishing, the cup must be placed upside down on one’s head. The first to achieve this without spilling a drop wins the round.

The Rules and Strategy:

  • The Pour: A neutral party, often the “Tea Master,” pours the tea for both duelists. The pour must be fair, equal in quantity, and served at a temperature that, while warm, won’t scald the participants.
  • The Drink: Duelists must drink their tea in a manner deemed proper by the event’s standards. This often involves holding the cup by the handle, pinky out, and sipping without sloshing.
  • The Placement: After drinking, the cup must be placed on the head in one swift motion. The precision here can be the deciding factor; a cup that falls or spills disqualifies the participant.
  • The Duel: The duel can be a series of rounds, with each round’s winner advancing in a tournament-style competition. Sometimes, additional challenges like reciting poetry or answering trivia while drinking are added for complexity and entertainment.

The Etiquette and Atmosphere:

Tea dueling, while competitive, maintains an air of civility and humor. It’s not uncommon for duelists to engage in witty banter or for the audience to cheer and laugh at the participants’ antics. The setting is often decorated to enhance the historical feel, with vintage teapots, floral arrangements, and perhaps a string quartet playing softly in the background to set the mood.

The Appeal:

What makes tea dueling captivating is its blend of skill, strategy, and humor. It’s a test of not just one’s ability to drink tea quickly but also of grace, poise, and sometimes, sheer luck. It appeals to all ages, turning a simple act of drinking tea into a theatrical event, where everyone from the participants to the onlookers is drawn into the drama and excitement of the duel.

In essence, tea dueling at the Wyndonshire Renaissance Faire is more than just a competition; it’s a celebration of the quirky, the historical, and the communal spirit of the Faire, all served up in a delightful cup of tea.
